Newsletter: June 16th, 2015

Hello Veggie Lovers,

There are two people tied for first place (71 boxes!) in the number of Veggie Boxes purchased since we started using our current software in the summer of 2013. Woohoo! One of these fabulous winners is Emily Harrison. Check out what she has to say about Veggie Box…

How did you first hear about Veggie Box?

From Brian Hay at Performance Physical Therapy.

What is your all time favorite fruit or vegetable?

Hmmmmm. Probably fresh raspberries. Or maybe avocado. Or ice cold watermelon. Or sweet corn.

What are the best and most unusual things you received in your box?

Best: Pea shoots
Unusual: Kohlrabi

What keeps you coming back week after week?

The steady supply of farm to table food that opens up all kinds of possibilities. Either my husband and I will eat something delicious together, or if there is a lot of one veggie I’ll make something for my extended family, like carrot cookies, or if there is a LOT of something I’ll make a dish for the Ronald McDonald House, like potato-parsnip mash.  So we benefit, the farmer benefits, our family and the community benefits–it’s social action in a box!

And last but not least, do you have a recipe or kitchen tip you would like
to share with other Veggie Box subscribers?

Quick and healthy dinner:

Saute some greens in a little olive oil (chard, kale, beet, or whatever came in the Veggie Box that week). When they are almost done, push them over to the side of the pan, and add just a little more oil. Beat 2 eggs and pour the eggs into the pan; scramble them. You can mix the eggs into the greens as much or as little as you like. When they are done, take them out of the pan and put some fresh mozzarella or ricotta on top. You can serve this on toasted bread (like Seven Stars multigrain) or all by itself. When I come home from work and am especially tired this is a great quick supper.

Would you like to be featured in an upcoming Veggie Box newsletter? Answer the questions above and email them to cate@farmfreshri.org to be featured sometime in July.

Cheers

– Cate

In Your Box This Week: June 16th

The vegetable and farm names are linked to pages with additional information, so click on them to find out more.

*Your sweet potatoes will be a little dusty this week, as we continue to support our friends at Schartner Farms who lost their farm stand and washing facilities to a fire earlier in the spring.  A little extra washing on your part makes a big difference to a local farm!

Note:  This is what we expect in your box this week.  External factors like weather and the ability to harvest affect the farms with which we work.  Occasionally we have to make a last-minute swap.  We will always do our best to let you know of any changes, and to replace those items with something of equal value.

PS – Vacation/Cancellation Policy

On Thursdays, we contact farmers and let them know how much produce to harvest for the next week’s Veggie Boxes.  If you plan to be on vacation, or would like to cancel your subscription, please let us know by the end of the business day on Thursday.  (More notice than that is even better!)  After Thursday, requests to cancel a box for the following week cannot be processed.

PPS – Deadlines for Picking Up Boxes, Policies on Missing Boxes

The latest times that Veggie Boxes can be picked up vary by site. Please contact your site coordinator to learn the specifics for your location.  Veggie Boxes should always be picked up on the day of delivery. Some sites are able to hold boxes overnight if they are not picked up, but this is not possible at most sites.  Farm Fresh is not responsible for Veggie Boxes not picked up the day they are delivered, and cannot replace them or refund them if they are no longer there after delivery day.

What do you do if you go to pick up your box, and there aren’t any boxes left?  Contact your site coordinator and Farm Fresh as soon as you discover that your box is missing. (You can just send one email to both your site coordinator and veggiebox@farmfreshri.org.)  We will do our best to find the missing box or get a replacement box to you. If that is not possible, we will issue a refund.  Please be sure to contact us within 24 of the delivery.  After 24 hours, Veggie Box will no longer be able to replace or refund your box.
